Guitar Strumming Patterns
Guitar strumming patterns are of major importance for everyone learning to play guitar. All too frequently this aspect of learning guitar gets neglected and this often results in feelings of frustration.
While some people have the ability to simply pick up strum patterns by ear this is not true for most beginners. They require a more step by step method of learning in order to establish the rudiments of strumming and to later be able to improvise their own.
Here are some important starting points to know about strumming guitar. The first is that you dont need to know a lot of different strums. Luckily there are universal patterns which will cover you for 100s of songs!
Secondly the type of pick you choose is an important factor in the type of sound you'll produce throughout your guitar strumming patterns. I would recommend that you use a .60mm pick. It will feel easier to strum with a pick of this thickness than say a 1mm pick and wont sound as harsh either. Experiment and see for yourself!
Thirdly the tension in your wrist is extremely important. I have had many students where the problems experienced in their ability to strum guitar were all to do with their wrist. Unfortunately they had a natural tendency to hold their it very rigidly instead of loose and easy, this fact translated directly into a harsh and abrasive sound. It also felt harder to them to play guitar because of the resistance against the strings.
Learning to strum guitar online can be a bit treacherous! There appears to be a great deal of just plain bad instruction out there on the subject and you could find that you suffer the unfortunate fate of things seeming harder that they should be. Whatever method or site you choose, make sure that the strumming lessons are simple, universal and useful in the real world. Dont waste energy learning strums for guitar you'll never really use!
